Almeria Coast

Located in the southeast of the Iberian peninsula on the Mediterranean Sea, the Costa de Almeria boasts 200km of beaches from Pulpi in the east to Adra in the west. Almeria’s climate is subtropical, Mediterranean, warm and dry with cloudless bright skies.

Over the last few years, the province of Almeria has undergone a steady increase in its social and economic development, centred around the introduction of modern agriculture, the mining of white marble and the tourist sector. Mojacar

No other corner of Andalusia can boast such a rich and close heritage to it’s Moorish past than Mojacar. Today it is a modern tourist destination offering a blend of tranquillity and enjoyment whilst retaining its medieval authenticity. With 17km of shoreline, from La Marina de la Torre to Sopalmo you can escape to an empty cove or enjoy one of the more bustling beaches.

The sports and leisure facilities are second to none, and include golf, tennis, diving and water sports. A rich variety of regional and international cuisine is available from the wide choice of restaurants. When the sun sets over the mountains there is an abundance of nightlife to suit all ages and tastes. From nightclubs, open air concerts, exhibitions and shows to relaxed conversations and candlelit encounters.

Garrucha

A fishing town on the Almeria coast used since the 19C as a holiday spot by wealthy landowners and mining executives. The busy port used by fishing boats, merchant ships and pleasure craft alike, remains the main focal point. The life of the town revolves around the fishing industry and Gurrucha is renowned for its superb fish cuisine, and in particular ‘Garrucha prawns’.

With its fish market where auctions are held, the Maritime Promenade and the Fisherman’s Monument, Garrucha’s heritage is beautifully maintained.

Vera

Vera is one of the most important commercial centres in the region. Saturday is market day, and the town is renowned for its ceramic handicrafts, decorative iron grilles, esparto grass weaving and marble cutting. There are a number of carnivals and fiestas throughout the year.

Places of interest include the 16C parish church of La Encarnacion, the 17C Padres Minimos Convent and the Archaeological and Ethnographical Museum.

Vera’s 6km of beach front, part of which is reserved for nudism, is currently undergoing extensive urban redevelopment. Mar y Cielo, Las Marinas, Pueblo Laguna and El Playazo are amongst its numerous beaches.

Golf can be enjoyed at the challenging Valle del Este 18 hole course.

Turre

Turre is an inland village of Muslim origin. Predominantly a farming community there are many excellent restaurants specialising in regional cuisine. Local crafts include iron and tin work and esparto grass weaving. Part of the region is in the Sierra Cabrera mountain range, an area of exceptional beauty ideal for rock climbing.

Places of interest include the ruins of the historic Hispanic/Muslim villages of Terasa and Cabrera, the 16C chapel of San Francisco de Asis and the 19C parish church.

The Cortijo Grande golf course is near by. A flat course winding through orange and lemon groves giving a constant reminder of the southern Mediterranean climate.

Arboleas

Arboleas is a typical Spanish village. There is a very friendly, rural atmosphere here and the locals are very willing and patient to help you practice and learn Spanish. The nearest beach is just twenty minutes drive away from Arboleas, and the Sierra Nevada is 2 hours drive away.

The rural way of life is still evident in Arboleas, and many of the other towns in the area particularly in the way the locals take great delight in making wine from their own grapes, or fresh olive oil from the many olive trees nearby.

There are many other varieties of produce grown here such as oranges and it is not uncommon for your Spanish neighbour to turn up on your doorstep carrying bags of fruit or anything else they have recently picked!

Almerimar

Almerimar is situated 40km west of Almería and 160km east of Malaga in the South-East of Spain. Each kilometre offers a new discovery for those who visit this part of Spain for the first time.

Almerimar remains an unspoilt paradise with immaculate sandy beaches, magical landscapes and is close to the ecologically important nature reserve of Punta Entinas There is a 1100 berth port and the ‘Copo’ shopping centre is just five minutes away.The exceptional 18 hole golf course was designed by Gary Player and it will shortly be extended by a further 9 holes.
